MUSTARD SEED FAITH

Hello friends, trust you are good. Today I'll be sharing a piece I titled Mustard Seed Faith. And our text is

Matthew 17:14-20:

14

When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him.

15

“Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.

16

I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”

17

“You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.”

18

Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.

19

Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

20

He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

First, let's learn from the disciple's action. They encountered a challenge, but instead of complaining, they asked the master Why. (vs 19)

Many-a-times, Christians today, when faced with a situation we feel isn't right, instead of inquiring from the father why such things happen, we either stay around worrying or we go about complaining.

Like Matthew 13:11 says, it has been given unto us to know the mysteries of the kingdom, let's then take advantage of this privilege and understand the mind of God.

In vs 20, Jesus mentioned it that the key to doing the 'impossible' is 'Faith, as tiny as a Mustard seed'.

Now, looking at the description Jesus gave, a Mustard seed'is probably the smallest you can find around, so I see Jesus saying that all you need to wrought wonders in His name is just the tiniest drop of faith.

The challenging thing now is that are we saying that the Church is filled with 'faithless' people? Because if all it takes is a 'tiny drop of Faith' why then isn't every member of God's body not working in this dimension?

Well, here is it. When Jesus talked about the size of our faith, He wasn't talking about size in terms of 'quantity', instead he meant the 'quality' of your faith.

- What is Quantity in faith?

'I was born into a Christmas family, so I grew up all my life in the church', 'I gave my life to Christ many many years ago and have served in various capacities in the church.'

Statement like this barely show the quantity of your faith

When we talk about Quality, it means how developed is your faith. And for our faith to be developed, it must have been tried over time, because there is something as the 'Trying of Faith' (James 1:3).

- How then is Faith built, you ask?
It's Built by Speaking

- What do we speak?
God's Word

Joshua 1:8 says that
"This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, thou shall meditate on it day and night..."

- What then is the correlation between speaking and meditating?

Reading the scriptures gives us just knowledge, stores it up in our brain but meditation takes the knowledge and turns it to understanding, by taking the word to our heart. It's now out of the abundance of that heart that the mouth will speak. (Matt. 12:34 )

So, it's God's word that births, sustains and builds our faith.

Acts 20:32 says that "Now I commend you unto God and to the Word of His Grace, which is able to build you up.....

I ask that the Lord himself will continually strengthen us by His power, in Jesus' name. Amen.
